It was a good weekend for Bulawayo and Zimbabwe as the city witnessed victories for two international teams who played hosts in the City of Kings on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, the Zimbabwe national rugby side welcomed the Simbas of Kenya in a Victoria Cup match played at Hartsfield rugby ground where the Sables narrowly defeated their guests 30-29.
Zimbabwe stretched their winning streak to three games in this year's edition of the Victoria Cup having registered victories over Zambia and Uganda in their first two games. The victory also meant that the Sables remain unbeaten in this year’s tournament.
The Sables' next game of the competition is against Uganda on the 24th of August in the Sunshine City of Harare.
On Sunday at Barbourfields stadium, the Warriors beat Mauritius 3-1 in a second leg encounter of the African Nations Championship’s (Chan) first round qualifiers. The victory means the Warriors thumped Mauritius 7-1 on aggregate after beating the Indian Ocean located island 4-0 in Mauritius.
Prince Dube scored a hat trick thanks to his strikes in the 16th, 67th and 83rd minutes respectively to complete Zimbabwe's comeback as the visitors struck first early in the first half.
The Warriors will now meet Lesotho in the second round of the qualifiers and a victory will secure them a ticket to Cameroon for the 2020 Chan tournament early next year. Lesotho qualified after beating South Africa 6-2 on aggregate.
