Sports administrator sends SOS to govt

Government has been urged to subsidies sports in the country because it is now a sector that employs thousands of people. In an interview with next level reporters Brenda Zinyuke and Sandile Moyo, renowned sports administrator Sphambaniso Dube said with economy in dire straits sporting associations could collapse unless government intervenes. “Government should take sports seriously and recognise its potential to earn the country the much needed foreign currency, I am actually disappointed by the withdrawal of Zimbabwe as a host country for this year’s COSAFA senior men’s cup”, Dube said “Zimbabwe should take a cue from our neighbour South Africa who are reaping major rewards from hosting various international show pieces in a way boosting their tourism sector and the quality of their infrastructure”, the former ZIFA Bulawayo provincial administrator added Sphambaniso Dube was speaking to Next Level Sport TV in an exclusive interview in which he was talking on the viability of the Southern region 1st division which experienced several false starts as teams battled to source affiliation fees and sponsorship. This second tire league features teams in the Bulawayo province and those from the Matabeleland North. The high costs of travel could see some of the poorly funded teams in the league collapse before the season concludes.
